1.3 explain the changes in arrangement, movement and energy of particles during these interconversions.

I basically explained this in 1.2 but I'll go over it again:

SOLIDS:

- Particles are packed together ~ Don't move ~ Small vibrations

LIQUIDS:

- Free to move ~ Move to fit container ~ Constantly small movements

GASES:

- Free to spread far apart ~ Moves freely and always fits container ~ Constantly moving with random motion

1.2 understand how the interconversions of solids, liquids and gases are achieved and recall the names used for these interconversions


Solid -> Liquid
When the solid is heated, the particles gain energy causing the particles to vibrate more. As you should know this weakens the forces that keep the solid 'solid'. (In 1.1 we talk about how heating solids expands it.) The particles now have enough energy to be free from their lattice - this is called MELTING.

- Liquid -> Gas
When a liquid is heated, the particles simply gain more energy and hence move even faster. Eventually the bonds break which hold the liquid together causing the liquid to turn into a gas - this is called EVAPORATING.

- Gas -> Liquid
When a gas is cooled, some of the particles loose energy, this causes them to come together and for them to create bonds. During this process heat is given out. This is called CONDENSING.

- Liquid -> Solid
When a liquid is frozen, even more energy is lost and more heat is given out. When the particles are frozen, the particles start to travel very slowly and their attractions cause them to place themselves in a solid lattice causing them to bond. This is called FREEZING.

SOLIDS:

- In solids, there are very strong forces of attraction between all of the particles - this is what holds the very tightly together. The particles are in a fixed position which is why the particles form the lattice arrangement.
- As the particles are tightly packed, the particles cannot move hence keeping the same shape and the same volume.
- In solids, the particles vibrate (although you can't see it) and when the solid starts to heat up the particles vibrate more which causes the object to expand. Like a metal bridge, sometimes the joints of the bolts become loose since in the day the steel heats up and expands then during the night it cools and reverts back to its normal position.

LIQUIDS:

- In liquids, there is a weak force of attraction between the particles. The particles are randomly arranged and are therefore free to move around each other (However don't be confused with gases since liquids tend to stick near each other).
- Liquids have the same volume but don't stick to the same shape therefore will try to fit its container.
- In liquids, the particles never stop moving and they move randomly. Just like solids when they are heated the particles vibrate more (or move faster). Hence expanding.

GASES:

- In gases, there is a VERY weak force of attraction which allows them to move freely and spread out far. They only travel in straight lines.
- Gases never keep the same volume or shape and so will always fit any container.
- In gases, the particles constantly move (always in a random motion). As the gas gets heated, the particles move faster. When heated the gases either expand / or their pressure increases.
